Update: After two inspections, Sacramento taqueria with roach infestation cleared to reopen

Sacramento County health inspectors first closed Urbano’s Mexican Restaurant on Dec. 6 due to a cockroach infestation. After two failed re-inspections and more than 100 dead roaches, it was finally approved to reopen Friday.

The Carmichael taqueria at 5825 Manzanita Ave. had cockroaches crawling on the prep line floor, on the wall behind the prep line, under the meat slicer, on the wall above a sink and around a refrigeration unit, according to the Dec. 7 report. There were also about 20 dead or dying cockroaches “all over the place,” the inspector wrote.

When an inspector came back on Dec. 11, she found more than 100 dead cockroaches and roach feces throughout the facility, according to that report. There were some live and dying roaches as well, plus rat droppings. The Dec. 7 report did not mention a rodent infestation, and a report for the failed inspection on Dec. 6 was not immediately available.

Owner Urbano Tovar had to show that his restaurant had all broken walls fixed, all cracks sealed and was continuing pest control service before it passed reinspection Friday morning.

Urbano’s also has a small Mexican market, carniceria and freezer full of paletas as well as a menu of tamales, burritos, tacos, combo plates and breakfast items. It had 3½ out of 5 stars on Yelp as of Thursday afternoon.
