Sacramento Bee readers voted Lo/Fi makers of the region’s best sandwiches in a weeklong poll that concluded at noon Monday. The restaurant at 921 V St. received 1,360 of 5,066 votes, or 26.8%.

Former Revolution Winery & Kitchen chef Bryan Widener had the bad luck of opening his snug, 500-square-foot lunch counter in February 2020. But not only has Lo/Fi managed to stay open throughout the pandemic, it’s developed a passionate following thanks to sandwiches like the Reubenesque (smoked pork loin, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and caramelized onions on sourdough).

Lo/Fi’s neighborhood is a little more residential than the downtown sandwich shops and few remaining office workers a dozen blocks to the north. It’s currently closed Monday through Wednesday, open 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for “Bodega Brunch” on Sunday.

An even simpler concept, Giò Chả Đức Hương Sandwiches, finished second with 906 votes (17.9%). Small banh mi are just $3 (order them on the off-menu garlic bread for an extra kick) and large are $5.50 at the Little Saigon restaurant and market at 6825 Stockton Blvd., Suite 200.

Venerable East Sacramento grocery store Corti Bros. came in right behind Đức Hương with 17.5%. It’s best known for the $7.49 Corti Special: buyer picks the bread, cheese and toppings, sandwich-maker chooses the meat.

Zia’s Delicatessen (5.4%) and Roxie Deli & Barbecue (4.7%) were the only other restaurants to receive more than 2% of the vote.
