Boba ice cream and vegan burgers: These 14 restaurants opened around Sacramento in May

With California’s full reopening just two weeks away, more restaurants are welcoming customers for the first time.

These 14 new restaurants opened around the Sacramento area in May 2021:

Boba Pho U (3071 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento): You’ll find wagyu pho, boba-packed ice cream and more at this exposed-brick cafe across from McClatchy High School.

Burger Patch (1420 65th St., Suite 107, Sacramento): Phil and Danea Horn’s plant-based fast food concept opened in East Sacramento on May 15; a fourth location and central kitchen is planned for Land Park.

Crepes & Burgers (313 Iron Point Rd., Folsom): There’s truth in advertising in the name of this restaurant (plus eggs, salads, sandwiches and pasta), which also has Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks locations.

Hooby’s Farm (24830 County Rd. 95, Davis): Winters-based Hooby’s Brewing sells sandwiches, fruit cups and chips alongside beer, but customers are welcome to bring their own picnics (sans alcohol) to the working farm/outdoor taproom open exclusively on weekends to start.

Jefferson Bar & Grill (1522 Jefferson Blvd., West Sacramento): Pasta, salads and sandwiches replaced the longstanding Sail Inn in this new restaurant and bar from Railroad Fish & Chips owner Dean Huitrado.

Mattone Ristorante (5723 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento): Former Biba bartender June Chang recruited several former co-workers and adapted some of the iconic Italian restaurant’s dishes for his new spot where Espanol Italian Restaurant used to be.

Mooyah Burgers, Fries & Shakes (8251 Bruceville Rd., Suite 150, Sacramento): Franchisee Mo Sina opened the first local Mooyah in Rocklin six years ago and brought burgers like the “hamburdog” (beef patty and hot dog, cheddar, bacon, jalapeños, fried onion strings and ketchup between potato buns) to North Laguna on May 24.

Plank Craft Kitchen & Bar (608 Sutter St., Folsom): Rock-N-Fire’s sister restaurant in the Folsom Historic District specializes in New American food like roasted turkey BLTs or seared ahi in orange ponzu sauce.

Plant Power Fast Food (1100 R St., Sacramento): Burger Patch got a competitor when this San Diego-based vegan fast food chain took over Aji Dori’s old spot in the R Street Corridor on May 28.

South Quarters (5443 Dudley Blvd, McClellan Park): The newest stand in McClellan Commissary features Texas barbecue classics like smoked brisket and ribs as well as Southern fried seafood and chicken.

The Bee’s Cafe++ (3315 Northgate Blvd., Suite 9, Sacramento): Natomas native Juan Alvarez, a longtime area cook who founded Chef Juan Catering Kitchen five years ago, opened his first brick-and-mortar restaurant for breakfast and lunch on May 21.

The Collective Cafe & Private Dining (716 7th St., Sacramento): Sacramento Catering Collective’s downtown, public-facing cafe with sandwiches, soups and Freeport Bakery treats opened in mid-May.

Ttongbee Chicken (3551 Truxel Rd., Suite A3, Sacramento): It’s the first area location for this Korean fried chicken chain, with famously thin batter, though outposts in Folsom, Roseville and Elk Grove are coming soon.

Vons Chicken (5825 Gibbons Dr., Carmichael): Meanwhile, this Korean fried and baked chicken restaurant is already on its third Sacramento-area opening in the last sixth months, preceded by Roseville and Arden Arcade outposts.
