A fire at a popular midtown Sacramento restaurant has closed the eatery indefinitely.

No one was hurt in the fire Thursday at Journey to the Dumpling, in the 1700 block of 21st Street, but the blaze shuttered the site until further notice as the restaurant’s owners assess the damage and work on repairs, according to a message to patrons posted to social media.

“Thankfully, no one was injured, and we are truly grateful for the safety of our team and community,” read a message posted to Instagram, thanking patrons for their “understanding and continued support during this challenging time.”

Journey to the Dumpling first opened in Elk Grove in 2016 in the city’s Laguna Crossroads retail center in 2016 and quickly became a sought-after dining destination for its soup dumplings or xiaolongbao, and other contemporary Chinese cuisine. The Elk Grove location was named one of The Sacramento Bee’s Top 50 Restaurants in 2022.

The restaurant’s second highly anticipated midtown location opened in 2023, cracking The Bee’s Top 50 this year.
