A beloved East Sacramento pasty shop is closing this month, according to an announcement made by the business on Thursday.

The Pastry Shack on 4746 J St. will close Friday, April 24, having served Sacramento since 1952, its website said. The family-owned business sells freshly baked and frozen Cornish, Bavarian and Mexican pasties.

Bobbie Mier, the business’s owner, said the East Sacramento staple is closing due to financial reasons, ending its 74-year-long run.

“Everything has gotten so expensive with taxes, everything,” Mier said. “It’s difficult to keep things going with the increase in everything.”

Pasty Shack serves seven types of savory meat pies, including its classic Cornish pasty stuffed with diced beef, potatoes and onions.

Mier and her husband took ownership of the business 35 years ago, she said. She recalls spending her childhood living a few blocks down from Pasty Shack.

After her husband’s passing 10 years ago, Mier now runs the shack. It started as a small business run out of a garage in midtown in the 1950s. It moved to a temporary location next to Corti Brothers on Folsom Boulevard and then to its current home on J Street. The Shack has kept the “same original recipes,” Mier said.

With the sun setting on Pasty Shack, Mier cherishes the business’s customers the most. Over time, they became friends.

“We kept seeing people come back year after year,” Mier said. “Just having a unique, small little shop in East Sacramento, where my husband and I both grew up ... it’s home to us.”

The Pasty Shack is open from Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
