This North Highland Indian restaurant is having its grand opening — sort of

Shagun Indian Cuisine, an Indian restaurant in North Highlands has announced its grand opening for Friday, May 1 in a series of cinematic videos on the restaurant’s social media.

However, Shagun isn’t exactly a new restaurant. The restaurant initially opened in 2022, and after some fits and starts reopened in 2024. But since the owners hadn’t really put any marketing muscle behind it, the launch didn’t garner much attention.

“We’ve had this restaurant for a while. It’s just we never actually advertised for it. So because of that, it was never super successful,” said owner Baljinder Singh.

Shagun won’t be exactly the same as other curry houses. While the restaurant will serve classic dishes such as chicken tikka masala and biryani, it also aims to introduce some fusion dishes and menu items that might appeal to a broader audience, such as hot Cheeto loaded fries.

It’s also adding mocktails, including one with mango and Chamoy, and some more western desserts. A highlight will be its chai and Indian coffee, which will be a stronger tasting coffee with chai spices.

Singh hopes throwing a grand opening will bring a spotlight to the restaurant.

“Yes, so this is a grand reopening. But not a lot of people had known about the restaurant. Our customer base is really small, so now we’re just trying to reach out to a bigger connection of people,” he said.
