AI meets laundry: Check out innovative laundry center in midtown Sacramento

Inside Look is a Sacramento Bee series where we take readers behind the scenes at restaurants, new businesses, local landmarks and news stories.

In midtown, artificial intelligence isn’t writing code or driving cars. It’s folding your laundry.

And it’s got a name: Sophy Swiftfold.

At Monster Laundry, a new high-tech wash-and-fold service, AI-powered robots are learning how to handle T-shirts, towels and more. The new operation, which revamped the traditional coin-operated laundromat at 1603 F St., is a full-service laundry center that uses AI-powered technology to execute the perfect fold each and every time.

Co-founder and CEO Craig Taylor, whose background is in biotechnology, said he is aiming for the company to be the “Nordstrom of laundry.”

“That’s what we’re targeting,” Taylor said. “To be the best experience possible from the start of your interactions with Monster all the way to the end.”

The business model is simple.

A full service, Taylor explained, includes their delivery driver going out to collect the laundry from the customer’s front doorstep, free of charge.

It’s brought back to Monster Laundry in midtown and handed off to service attendants who wash items using their washing machines, or extractors, before placing them in the dryer to complete the cycle.

The now-clean, dried clothes are thrown into a hamper and pushed into their robot enclosure to begin the folding process.

“It has the ability to fold T-shirts and towels right now,” Taylor said, “and it will learn over time how to fold everything.”

Once Sophy has completed its folding process, Taylor said, the attendant will collect the folded laundry and package that folded laundry into bags that are sealed and labeled and sent back to the customer’s front porch the next day.

Prices for next-day wash and fold services begin at $2.35 a pound with a minimum of 15 pounds as well as a discount for recurring service. The prices are comparable to other laundry services in the capital region.

Chief Operating Officer Michelle Wei-Lin See said Monster is where “AI meets laundry.”

“The robot is going to just kind of enhance what our attendants do,” Wei-Lin See said. “They will make it so everything is a little bit more consistent. I think that’s where we’re going. It’s like AI is everywhere now. AI is in a laundry center.”

For those who eschew technology, self-service washers and dryers are still available at the business, located in the same row of businesses at 16th and F as Sampino’s Towne Foods and 16th Street Donuts.

Monster Laundry is open daily from 6 a.m to 10 p.m. Last wash is at 9 p.m.
