What’s happening with Sears at Arden Fair in Sacramento? A construction update
People driving past the former Sears building at Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento have been seeing the building transform as it makes way for Dick’s House of Sports and a variety of new businesses.
The building is being redeveloped rather than demolished, according to Nathan Spradlin, the marking director for Arden Fair. Redevelopment means modifying the former Sears building to align with Dick’s House of Sports in-store features.
“While the (Sears) structure itself remains, the scale of these changes will result in a dramatically different space compared to the former Sears,” Spradlin said.
Dick’s House of Sports, set to be completed in spring 2027, is more experimental than the original Dick’s Sporting Goods, Spradlin said. The store will have a climbing wall, a central skylight atrium and window lines overseeing an outdoor field.
Both the interior and exterior of the building will be redeveloped, Spradlin said. The former automotive center will be removed to create an outdoor space for events. The current entrance doors will be going away as a result of the redesign.
The interior reconstruction, Spradlin explained, includes removing parts of the second floor to make way for a central atrium and climbing wall- a design that can be seen in aerial images of the building where an open space sits in the middle.
Sears closed at Arden Fair April 15, 2021. It had been one of the mall’s anchor stores for more than 50 years, according to previous reporting from The Sacramento Bee.
What else is coming to Arden Fair?
Other businesses coming to the mall include a Fabletics, Levi’s, Taco Bell Cantina, and True Religion.
“We’re seeing very strong leasing momentum at Arden Fair, and it’s not by accident,” Spradlin said. “It’s the result of a focused, multi-year effort to elevate the tenant mix and overall experience.”
Taco Bell Cantina is known as an “upscale, urban-concept” compared to the original Taco Bell, according to the restaurant’s website. Arden Fair’s cantina will be open in early June, Spradlin said.
Fabletics is arriving in late June. The store specializes in activewear such as leggings and sweatpants.
Levi’s is scheduled to open in July, Spradlin said. Known as one of the “world’s largest apparel companies,” Levi’s has more 500 stores across 100 countries, according to its website.
Another denim clothing brand is heading to Arden. True Religion arrives in November, Spradlin said. The brand is famous its five pocket and “Super T stitch” design, according to its website. Spradlin said the introduction of businesses isn’t just about adding more stores to the mail, but also about bringing economic contributions to Sacramento.
Arden Fair has made a “deliberate” effort to partner with modern brands that “resonate” with a modern customer base, Spradlin said. This mission include adding businesses that are viewed as more relevant and aligned with retail industry trends.
“We’re continuing to evolve the center into a place where people come not just to shop, but to spend time, discover new brands, and enjoy experiences that feel fresh, dynamic and uniquely ours,” Spradlin said. “What you’re seeing now is really just the beginning of what’s ahead.”
