On one of the most dramatic stretches of Northern California coastline — between Mendocino and Sea Ranch — an awe-inspiring 20-acre estate exposed to the Pacific Ocean is for sale for $7.5 million.

Dubbed Sea Arches, the residence is named after the small rocky islands and sea stacks that are part of the property. On the edge of a promontory in Elk, California, the architecturally stunning, four-bedroom, wood-and-glass home spans 4,240 square feet. There are also four Zen-inspired bathrooms.

The property’s exceptional privacy and distinctive coastal location makes it a rare listing, according to listing agent Kevin McDonald of Sotheby’s International Realty-Wine Country–Sonoma Brokerage.

The property off Highway 1 resembles your own private headlands park with unparalleled panoramic views of the sea arches and the coastline. Private trails skirt the edge of the seaside bluff above nearly a half-mile of ocean frontage. Wild native vegetation blends with the estate’s well-designed grounds.

“The privacy and having your own private point or own private park, doesn’t come along often,” he said. “They’ve done a good job of manicuring the property so it’s usable.

Sea arches included

“Another thing that makes it unique is that the sea stacks, or the small little island out in front that’s technically attached to the property with the sea arches on it — you don’t often see that,” he added. “Usually, property lines end on the coastline, and you don’t get the shoreline.”

After coming down a gated driveway flanked by cypress, the residence is entered through double entry doors with glass paneling and sidelights. The ocean views, visible through expansive glass walls, are immediate.

The architecture and ambiance of the home mingles with the outdoors. The house is warmed by natural heat from a wood burning fireplace and radiant heat under slate flooring. An exquisite spiral staircase leads to the upper mezzanine — and you can imagine the mesmerizing views up there.

The upper level opens to an outside viewing catwalk floating over the dynamic landscape.

A spacious kitchen and dining area hold clean lines. An ensuite bedroom is attached by a covered walkway, adjacent to the garage. Down the breezeway, a private guest quarters include one bedroom, one bathroom — plus a second story-seating area with captivating views.

Wine entrepreneurs Gordon Uhlmann and Wendy Van Dyck, who co-founded Half Wit Wines, own the property via a trust, according to public records. The home was purchased in 2017 for $3.6 million.

Elk was named “America’s best small food and wine town of 2024” by Travel and Leisure Magazine in an article featuring Harbor House, the Michelin-starred restaurant just a mile away from Sea Arches.

“You could walk, if you were ambitious, to a Michelin-star restaurant,” McDonald said. “So it’s cool in that regard, that there’s some things going on nearby. It’s not just completely remote for being in Mendocino County.”

Elk is about a three-hour drive north from San Francisco.

“With endless miles of coastline around the world, it’s very difficult to find another offering which rivals the beauty and solitude of Sea Arches and the surrounding area,” the Sotheby’s official property listing states.
