The week is coming to an end, so that means it’s time for another installment of the Black in Sac event listings. This is the 15th consecutive week. We thank those who have contributed by submitting events via our Google Form or by messaging or tagging Black Communities reporter Marcus D. Smith on social media.
Your submissions allow us to update Sacramento with events and giev you opportunities to enjoy what creators, innovators and entrepreneurs are bringing to the capital. We appreciate your listings and thank you for continuing to allow us to highlight your events.
We’ve got you covered this week between Dec. 16 and Dec. 23. Here’s a list of things you can invite your friends and family to. Remember to dress warm, wear a mask and take necessary health precautions. If you’re feeling under the weather, stay home.

SHOP TALK: Finish Strong To Start Stronger
This free virtual event is calling on men, ages 18 and up, to come together to reflect on the previous year and set intentions for the next year. The intention is to empower individuals and positively impact their lives, motivating them to do the same for others.
The event is Thursday at 6 p.m.
There will be a variety of activities to assist viewers in becoming more self-aware of their talents and skills, building upon personal responsibility and accountability traits. The event is supposed to breed confidence in individuals so they can be proud of what makes them unique.
Bestselling Author, transformational coach and speaker Dwight Taylor, Sr. will present the Zoom event. Registration is available through the link provided.
A Study on Malcolm X
The Neighbor Program will be hosting an ideological study session on the life of Malcolm X on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Attendees should meet at the Foreign Native Center, located at 3540 Third Ave. They plan is to host the event live, in-person, as well as virtually. Registration for the event is available at www.tinyurl.com/mxspeaks.
Once you fill out the registration form, the Neighbor Program will have you accommodated with in-person seating or with the Zoom link to the event, for virtual participants.
Another event will be held on Dec. 30.
My Urban Society Presents: R&B Lovers
My Urban Society hosts their Infusion Nights at The Odd Cookie Bakery Cafe and Bar, located at 1015 Ninth St., from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Every Friday is R&B Lovers night where you’ll enjoy a night of the greatest R&B hits of all-time.There will be a splash of hip-hop played.
Be sure to come dressed to impress. This is a free event for those on the guest list. The guest list closes at 11 p.m. To RSVP, register on Eventbrite.
Tiger
Tiger is a lounge and bar, located at 722 K St., that has upped the nightlife in Sacramento with their weekly lineup.
Their “Purr” Thursdays, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m, is ladies night featuring DJ sets by DJ Eddy, DJ Genetixx and DJ Jay. They will be mixing sounds of the ‘90s featuring their theme night, “2Pac vs. Biggie”.
For those who enjoy R&B music, Tiger hosts its “Love” Fridays that features live music from local artist Julian Cunningham, better known by his artist name, Jamal Tru and Hayez, the band. DJ Jehred will be mixing sounds in different sets throughout the night from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Saturday nights are HOF Night featuring music from Jamal Tru and Hayez, with DJ sets from DJ Robbie and DJ Eddy.
There will be a $20 cover charge after 10 p.m. VIP reservations are available. For more information, contact management at Tiger.
Night Market Series : Night Before Christmas Industry Mixer
The Night Market is back presenting a ”Night Before Christmas” Industry Mixer on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and will partner with Abas Clothing and Slim and Husky’s to host the event.
The event will be held at Slim and Husky’s, located at 3414 Broadway.
This event, along with parking, is free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP through the Eventbrite link. Tickets are limited.
In a toast to each other, they will celebrate the individuals who contributed to making Sacramento a better community. They will be wrapping up 2021 and connecting with each other on how they can do more in 2022.
The event is open to all; artists, creatives, community leaders and small business owners are encouraged to attend.
Life’s Illustrations Art Showcase at 1913
Life’s Illustrations Art Showcase has been hosting their showcases since 2017, but their last show was in 2019. This weekend they are returning with two live artwork events by local artists, featuring live entertainment.
Life’s Illustrations goals are to highlight and showcase local artists while bringing the community together in a positive and safe way.
The event will take place at 1913 Lounge, located at 1913 Del Paso Blvd.
There will be food, with a vegan option, live music and drinks. The event is open to ages 21 and up. An ID will be checked at the door. Masks are required for the event.
On Friday, Romin Bryant-Johnson will be showcasing his talent from 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets will be $20, which are available for purchase on Eventbrite.
On Sunday, Life’s Illustrations will host a Paint n’ Sip, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All registered attendees will receive a glass of signature wine, a canvas, instructor, and an apron. Together participants will be provided with paint, paint brushes, paint pallet, music and templates.
There will also be drinks and snacks for guests to enjoy. Tickets are $45 and also are available on Eventbrite.
African Marketplace at Florin Square
The African Marketplace is a celebration of Black-owned products, provided by Black-owned businesses and vendors. The event occurs on every first and third Saturday of the month, from noon to 6 p.m.
Join them this Saturday at 2251 Florin Rd.
Vendors showcase their products, which range from books, jewelry, food, catering services, a farmer’s market, apparel, hair and oral care, and much more.
This expo has over 30 different vendors in each pop-up.
It was the mission of James E. West, Sr. known as “Brother Ra” to the community, to bring Black culture and business to the neighborhood and to showcase all the talented and dedicated residents.
Faith J. McKinnie Gallery presents : Jupiter The Artist
The Faith J. McKinnie Gallery is a newly opened, Black-operated contemporary art gallery in midtown, on 1610 R St., in Rice Alley behind Device Brewing Co.
The gallery will host a solo exhibit showcasing the artwork and projects of Jupiter, the artist, through Jan. 2.
Jupiter says the show was created to focus on the gaze and perceptions that have been placed upon African American and Black people in this country. She gives Black figures the audacity to take space on canvases in their authenticity.
The gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday it is open from noon to 4 p.m. FJM Gallery is also open by appointment. The event is free and open to the public.
Naija Boy Taco Tuesday at Ro Sham Beaux
The Naija Boy Taco Tuesday is a weekly event at Ro Sham Beaux, located at 2413 J St.
Rasheed Amedu is bringing West African flavor to Mexican cuisine every Tuesday, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Spectra karaoke on Wednesdays at Streets Pub
Spectra is a musician, artist, and an avid fan of karaoke.
On Wednesdays, you can find her at Streets Pub, a Black-owned bar, located on 1804 J St.
She also hosts karaoke at Faces Nightclub, located 2000 K St., on Thursdays and Lighthouse Bar and Grill, located at West Capitol Avenue in West Sacramento, on Fridays and Saturdays.
