Yolo County authorities identify Davis teen killed in apparent accidental shooting

The Yolo County Coroner’s Office has identified the 19-year-old Davis man who died in what police described as an accidental shooting Thursday as Jerred Leroy Vargas.

Vargas was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where he died from injuries suffered by a single gunshot wound to the chest around 3:30 p.m. at his family apartment in the 2500 block of East Eighth Street, according to Davis police.

Police have identified the person suspected of firing the weapon, described as a handgun. According to the Davis Enterprise, Vargas was shot by his brother, who is cooperating with detectives. No arrests have been made.

“Even if it is accidental, someone lost their life. It’s only just for us to investigate and get some answers,” Deputy Chief Paul Doroshov told The Bee on Friday.

Vargas’ family has launched a GoFundMe in order to help the family pay for funeral expenses.

“(Jerred) loved his family more than anything and always had a smile on his face especially when he was fishing,” wrote Carmen Castellanos, the organizer of the fundraiser.

The Enterprise also reported that crisis counselors were made available to students across the Davis Joint Union School District.
