Pedestrian killed by train in North Highlands identified by Sacramento County coroner

A pedestrian fatally struck by a train Monday in North Highlands has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as a 42-year-old Sacramento man.

The coroner on Thursday identified Mark Cornaggia as the victim killed shortly after 4 a.m. on the tracks near Roseville Road and Longview Drive.

Union Pacific spokesman Tim McMahan confirmed in an emailed statement earlier this week that the incident involved a Union Pacific train heading westbound, and that no one on the train was injured. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Services personnel were dispatched, McMahan said.

The coroner’s decedent records show Cornaggia’s place of death as Mile Post 96.5 of the Martinez subdivision, which is the Union Pacific-operated railroad line that runs from J.R. Davis Yard south of Roseville to Oakland.

Three days earlier, a Union Pacific train struck a cargo van on tracks near Elder Creek and Power Inn roads in the city of Sacramento, hospitalizing the van’s driver with injuries, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
