Scooter rider killed by suspected intoxicated driver in Carmichael identified by coroner
A 66-year-old man using a mobility scooter died after a suspected intoxicated driver in a pickup veered into oncoming traffic and struck the elderly man on a Carmichael sidewalk Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Saturday as Gary Hurlbut of Carmichael. His death was listed as a criminal vehicle accident.
The crash was reported about 10:20 a.m. on the 4700 block of Manzanita Avenue, just north of Winding Way.
Adrian Philip Almaraz, 30, of Fair Oaks was driving a GMC pickup north on Manzanita before his vehicle swerved into the southbound lanes, said Officer A.J. McTaggart, a spokesman for the North Sacramento CHP unit.
The pickup veered onto the sidewalk on the west side of the street, hitting Hurlbut, who was using a motorized mobility scooter, McTaggart said.
The GMC pickup then struck a utility pole that was knocked to the ground, before the pickup struck a Toyota Camry that was pulling out of a driveway, McTaggart said.
He said Hurlbut died from his injuries. There were no injuries reported in the Toyota Camry.
Shortly after the crash, the CHP reported that one lane was full of debris and another lane was blocked by the downed utility pole.
Almaraz was booked at the Sacramento County Jail on charges of DUI causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, along with driving with a suspended or revoked license and hit-and-run causing property damage. His bail was set at $300,000, according to jail records.
