Coroner releases name of Woodland driver who died in Sacramento crash on Interstate 5

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office released the name of a Woodland man who died after crashing his car head-on into another vehicle while driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 Saturday night in Sacramento.

Ernest Gonzales, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

The fatal crash was reported about 11:50 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 5, north of Highway 99 and just north of Natomas. Gonzales was driving a Honda Accord and heading south in the northbound lanes, the CHP said in a news release.

The Honda Accord then drove directly into a Toyota Camry. The impact launched the Honda into the air before the left side of the car struck a Volvo D13, according to the CHP.

The CHP said the Toyota Camry driver, a Sacramento man, suffered major injuries was taken to a local hospital. A 38 year-old man from Moore, Idaho driving the Volvo suffered minor injuries. He also was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

After the crash, northbound traffic on I-5 was diverted to Highway 99 for more than two hours as investigators worked at the scene.

The CHP asked anyone who witnessed this fatal crash or has additional information to call Officer A.J. McTaggart of the North Sacramento Area CHP office at 916-348-2317.
