A developer is planning to build 269 apartments in North Sacramento’s Woodlake neighborhood.

The apartments would all be market rate, said Nathaniel Sebok, principal at Mogavero Architects. He did not have a range of rental prices available, but said it would be more affordable than downtown and midtown.

The development, called The Grove at Woodlake, would be built just north of Highway 160, on several vacant lots between Royal Oaks Drive and Canterbury Road, near Woodlake High School.

The size of the units would range from studios to three bedrooms, Sebok said.

The developer, Redwood Residential, is targeting young professionals, Sebok said. The project also would include a clubhouse with a fireplace, bike trail, a pool and spa, and could include outdoor games, barbecue areas or fire pits. Some units would have dens, which could be used for working from home.

Sebok stressed the importance of infill housing.

“We need to start finding these sites instead of expanding out to Natomas, out to Roseville,” Sebok said. “It’s really important to find these sites that are within the city urban fabric, that are existing, and utilize those. We’re really happy and proud to be doing that.”

An estimated 45,580 new housing units, including 16,769 for low-income residents, are needed in the city by 2029, according to a state-mandated report.

Construction on the apartments is set to start in fall 2022, and the units likely would be available for occupancy in late 2024, Sebok said.

The project requires city staff approval, but does not require Planning and Design Commission or City Council approval, Sebok said.
