23-year-old Yuba City man killed as car hits tree in high-speed crash near Browns Valley

Roadway fatality

A Yuba City man was killed in a single-vehicle crash and car fire early Friday near Browns Valley.

Investigators determined the vehicle was speeding when it hit a tree, leading it to overturn and catch fire, the California Highway Patrol’s Yuba-Sutter office said in a news release.

CHP officers responded to the crash, on Highway 20 near Spring Valley Road, about 2:30 a.m.

Cal Fire personnel arrived about 15 minutes later and discovered the vehicle, a Honda Civic, “fully engulfed in fire,” the CHP wrote.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters found a deceased 23-year-old man inside the vehicle.

The CHP says it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash, but that the Honda was traveling “at a high rate of speed when it left the road.”

The victim’s identity will be released by the Yuba County Coroner’s Office pending positive identification and notification of family.
