Your guide to Sacramento-area Passover Seders: These places have community gatherings

This Friday marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday known as Passover, or Pesach.

The eight-day holiday commemorates the freedom of Israelites from captivity in Egypt.

At the beginning of the holiday, families and friends congregate for a feast known as Seder. Some traditions that take place during this special dinner include discussing the story of Exodus for the holiday, eating matzo and other symbolic foods and drinking four cups of wine.

Here are some organizations and religious groups holding community Seder gatherings this weekend:

Chabad of Greater Sacramento

945 Evelyn Lane, Sacramento

The Chabad of Sacramento is inviting people to its community Seder gathering this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. following evening services. The organization is currently accepting RSVPs to its dinner online. For a full schedule of services happening at the center next week, you can check the Chabad house’s website.

Congregation B’nai Israel

3600 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento

The local synagogue will be holding a Saturday service for the second night of Passover at 5:30 p.m. For the second night of passover, the congregation will also be hosting a Seder. While registration for the gathering is now closed, CBI will live streaming the event on YouTube.

Chabad Jewish Community Center, Folsom

302 S Lexington Dr, Folsom

This community center, which serves Folsom, El Dorado Hills and other surrounding areas, is holding a Passover Seder this Friday from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for members of the Jewish community. Registration is available online, and a $55 donation is suggested for the traditional Seder meal.

Hillel at Davis and Sacramento

328 A St, Davis

This organization, which primarily serves college students in the area, is holding a Seder feast outdoors this Friday at 6 p.m. For those who can’t make the in-person event, Hillel will be live streaming it all on Zoom, which you can register for here.
