Will it rain in Sacramento on Thanksgiving? Here’s the latest forecast for holiday weekend

Will it rain in the Sacramento area on Thanksgiving? That’s one of the questions on locals’ minds as Turkey Day approaches.

The week will get off to a wet start, according to the National Weather Service.

Light to moderate rain is expected in the Valley through Tuesday, with (the) heaviest snow expected later (Monday) morning through Tuesday,” the weather agency wrote in a post on X on Monday.

“Use caution while driving,” the weather service added. “Roads will be slick!”

However, the sky above the capital region could clear in time for the holiday weekend, according to Nathan Rick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service

“After Wednesday morning, we should have pretty dry weather through the end of the holiday weekend,” Rick said Monday, along with cool temperatures.

“Thanksgiving is looking like it’ll be on the chilly side,” Rick said, with morning lows in the 30s.

More sunshine is expected on Friday, which will have a high near 56 and a low around 38.

Saturday will be sunny, with a high near 57 and an overnight low around 40.

How much rain has fallen in November so far?

According to the National Weather Service, the Sacramento area has experienced a wetter-than-average November so far.

On Friday, Nov. 22, an atmospheric storm-fueled storm soaked Sacramento with more rainfall than the capital city typically sees in the entire month of November, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.

According to the weather service, 1.96 inches of rain fell Friday at Sacramento Executive Airport — more than doubling the daily record of 0.86 inches of rain set on Nov. 22, 1978.

Sacramento’s average precipitation for the month of November is 1.86 inches, weather service records show.

As of Saturday, Nov. 23, the city of Sacramento had received 3.7 inches of rain since the start of November, the weather service said in an X post on Sunday, Nov. 24.

Normally, Sacramento has seen 1.29 inches of precipitation at that point, the agency said.

In contrast, the weather service said Modesto got 1.07 inches of rain from Nov. 1 to Nov. 23 — compared to 0.78 inches in a normal year.

Redding received 9.16 inches of rain during that time period, more than three times its normal precipitation of 2.58 inches, according to the weather service.

Although it’s not clear whether the trend will continue throughout the winter, it’s “certainly a good start,” Rick said.

Will Sierra Nevada get more snow?

Parts of the Sierra Nevada saw 6 to 18 inches of fresh snow over a 48-hour period, the National Weather Service said in a Sunday post on X, with up to 2 to 3 feet of snowfall along the peaks north of Interstate 80.

“Periods of moderate snow” were expected to return Sunday night through Tuesday, with the “strongest impacts” south of Highway 50, the weather service said

That’s good news for Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts, many of which planned to reopen during Thanksgiving week.
