Tow truck triggers 5-car wreck on Highway 99 north of Yuba City that sends 3 to area hospital

Northern California news

A tow truck plowed into a car Wednesday afternoon north of Yuba City, triggering a five-vehicle pileup that sent three people including a pregnant woman to the hospital.

The 3:13 p.m. wreck just south of Lomo Crossing between Yuba City and Live Oak in Sutter County shut down the highway for about an hour as rescuers tended to the injured, said California Highway Patrol officials.

CHP investigators say the tow truck’s driver was on northbound Highway 99 and failed to slow before closing in on traffic ahead. The truck plowed into the rear of a Subaru wagon, then sideswiped a Nissan pickup truck and a Hyundai sport utility vehicle. A Mazda SUV was also damaged in the afternoon collision.

A 50-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Subaru was taken to Adventist Health and Rideout hospital in Marysville with moderate injuries, said CHP officials. Two others — a man, 43, and a 29-year-old pregnant woman — were also taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not known.

Several others involved in the collision complained of pain but declined to be treated, said CHP officials. Neither drugs nor alcohol factored in the wreck, the CHP said.
