Joann is closing 500 fabric stores in US. Are Sacramento-area shops on the chopping block?

A recent California Supreme Court decision ruled in favor of the retail chain, which wanted to exercise a clause in its leasing contract for lower rent when an Elk Grove shopping center lost two anchor tenants. The court ruled on the matter after two appellate courts offered differing opinions on the viability of such agreements.

A popular fabric store chain is closing hundreds of stores across the nation — and some Sacramento-area locations are on the chopping block.

Jo-Ann Stores, better known as Joann, will close approximately 500 stores in the United States.

The company announced in January that it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to “facilitate a sale process to maximize the value of its business”.

“The last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, which, coupled with our current financial position and constrained inventory levels, forced us to take this step,” Joann interim CEO Michael Prendergast said in a January news release. “After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths, we have determined that initiating a court-supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business.”

On Wednesday, the company filed a motion seeking court authority to begin closing stores after “carefully reviewing all available strategic paths to address our ongoing industry, economic and financial challenges.”

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” a spokesperson for Joann said in a statement. “A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time.”

Here’s what to know:

Joann said it operates approximately 850 stores in a total of 49 states.
