Kohl’s is closing 27 stores across US, including this Sacramento-area location. Here’s when
Department store chain Kohl’s is closing 27 “underperforming” stores across the United States, including a Sacramento-area location.
The closures, which include 10 California sites, will occur by April, Kohl’s announced in a Jan. 9 news release.
“We always take these decisions very seriously,” Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury said in the release. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
In addition to shutting the stores, the company is bringing a new CEO onboard: Ashley Buchanan.
“I’m excited to work with the teams to evolve our business – building off the strength of our brand and loyal customer base while also creating a compelling retail experience for the future,” Buchanan said in a Jan. 15 news release.
Here’s what to know:
What is Kohl’s?
Kohl’s opened its first store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, in 1962, according to the company’s website.
The department store chain sells everything from clothing, shoes and jewelry to cosmetics, perfumes and home decor, according to its website.
“For over 60 years, we have served families of all shapes, sizes and configurations,” the company website said. “Simply put, we ‘CARE’: we are customer first, accountable, resourceful and empathetic.”
Kohl’s operates more than 1,100 stores in a total of 49 states, and conducts online sales at Kohls.com.
Which Sacramento-area department store is closing?
Kohl’s operates a total of 116 stores in California. Of those, 10 will close by April, according to the company.
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the company said the Jan. 9 news release.
Only one Kohl’s store is closing in Sacramento.
Kohl’s is at 1896 Arden Way in the Point West shopping center near Exposition Boulevard. The department store previously doubled as a dropoff location for Amazon returns.
Kohl’s said all employees at its Sacramento location have been informed about the closure and “offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s.”
What’s on sale?
Kohl’s is offering deals at its Sacramento store ahead of the closure.
Items across the entire store are 30% off with the exception of Sephora products, a Kohl’s employee told The Sacramento Bee.
Customers can also get 50% off home items on clearance, the employee said.
All sales are final, with no returns or exchanges allowed.
Where should I take my Amazon returns?
If you need to return an Amazon order, you’ll have to take it somewhere else.
Drop-offs for Amazon returns are closed at the Arden Way location, a Kohl’s employee told The Bee, and should be taken to the next nearest Kohl’s store.
