Person on tracks struck, killed by freight train near West Elkhorn Boulevard in Rio Linda

One person was killed Sunday after being struck by a freight train in Rio Linda.

According to Union Pacific officials, the person on the tracks and struck by the train about 1:15 p.m. a half-mile from the intersection of West Elkhorn Boulevard and East Levee Road. The crossing is in a mainly industrial area between Rio Linda and the edge of North Natomas’ Village 12 neighborhood. The train was heading southbound into Sacramento when the incident occurred near Straugh Road.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel. No personnel on the train were injured, authorities said.

A spokesperson for the railroad said the incident was under investigation by Union Pacific police.

The identity of the victim was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office in the coming days.
