Another Sacramento Walgreens is set to close. What will happen to prescriptions?
Less than a month after closing a Sacramento-area drugstore, Walgreens has announced plans to shut down another local pharmacy.
Walgreens, 2900 Stockton Blvd. in Sacramento, will close its doors this summer, according to Jennifer Cotto Johnson, media relations senior specialist for Walgreens.
Walgreens closed its Carmichael location in late April.
Overall, the pharmacy chain plans to shut down 1,200 locations across the nation in the next three years, Cotto Johnson told The Sacramento Bee.
“It is never an easy decision to close a store, and we know how important they are to the communities we serve and therefore do everything possible to improve their performance,” she wrote in a Wednesday, May 14, email. “When closures are necessary, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”
The includes redeploying the “majority of our team members from those stores that we close,” Cotto Johnson said.
Here’s what to know:
What is Walgreens?
The Walgreens drugstore chain was founded in 1901 by Charles R. Walgreen in Chicago, according to its website.
The chain offers items including medicine, vitamins, cosmetics and household products, as well as in-house pharmacies.
Walgreens’ parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, owns more than 12,500 locations in the United States, Europe and Latin America, according to Bee archives.
Where is store closing in Sacramento?
Walgreens is closing its store at 2900 Stockton Blvd. in Sacramento, near the intersection of Broadway and Stockton Boulevard.
The store is next to Rancho San Miguel Markets and across the street from the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures.
When’s the last day for Stockton Boulevard location?
The Sacramento Walgreens store is scheduled to close on Thursday, June 26, according to Cotto Johnson.
“We will miss seeing you and want to thank you for being a valued Walgreens customer,” store representatives wrote in a May 9 letter sent to customers.
What will happen to my prescriptions?
Prescription records for Walgreens customers will be available at CVS Pharmacy, 3710 Franklin Blvd. in Sacramento, beginning Friday, June 27, according to Cotto Johnson.
According to Walgreen’s website, customers should call a nearby Walgreens pharmacy or choose a different location when refilling prescriptions online.
Additionally, the site offers multiple delivery options, ranging from same-day delivery for $3.99 to five- to 10-day shipping for free.
Where else have local Walgreens pharmacies closed?
According to Cotto Johnson, no other Walgreens are set to close for Sacramento “at this time.”
Several Walgreens locations throughout Northern California have shut their doors over the past year or so, including these Sacramento-area spots, according to Bee archives:
Carmichael
- 6325 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Citrus Heights
- 6199 Sunrise Blvd.
North Highlands
- 6819 Watt Ave.
Placerville
- 4220 Missouri Flat Road
Sacramento
- 840 El Camino Ave.
- 1401 Broadway
- 7155 24th St.
Why are Walgreen drugstore locations closing?
This closure is part of the previously announced plan to close 1,200 stores over the next three years as part of the chain’s business strategy, according to Cotto Johnson.
“We will continue to execute our previously announced turnaround plan aimed at stabilizing the retail pharmacy, including our footprint optimization program,” Cotto Johnson said. “Increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs.”
Tim Wentworth, Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO said in an October statement that the retail pharmacy will be “controlling operating costs” including improving cash flow and continuing to address reimbursement models to support dispensing margins.
“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term,” Wentworth said.
In March 2023, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the state of California would not renew a multi-million- dollar contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy chain said it would not dispense abortion pills in some states.
Where are Walgreens stores still open?
As of Tuesday, there were a total of nine Walgreens stores open in Sacramento, including the Stockton Boulevard location.
They’re among approximately 20 Walgreens locations in the Sacramento region, including stores in Roseville, Citrus Heights and Elk Grove.
Are other pharmacy chains shutting stores?
Two other major chains have announced plans to close down stores in recent years.
Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023 due to growing debt, falling revenue and numerous lawsuits related to the opioid epidemic.
In February 2024 the company announced it would close more than 20 locations in California.
CVS announced it would shut down 270 stores nationwide in 2025 after closing 900 locations within a two-year period, according to Bee archives.
That includes an CVS store in Elk Grove.
