A Tahoe-area town is one of the most charming spots in California, according to U.S. News & World Report.

To create a list of the 21 Most Charming Small Towns in California, the publication sought out beautiful communities across the state where you can ditch big city crowds for the quiet life.

The top destinations “run the gamut of California’s uniquely varied landscapes, including mountain towns, secluded coastal communities, valley gems and more,” the report said.

Tahoe City landed on the non-numbered list.

Why is Tahoe-area town among most charming in California?

Advertised as “one of the prettiest places you’ll ever see,” Tahoe City is on the northwestern shore of Lake Tahoe, at the outlet of the Truckee River.

It’s about a 2-hour drive from Sacramento, according to Google Maps.

Tahoe City “lives along the quiet Lake Boulevard, which is lined with towering pine trees, beautiful lake views and a handful of local shops and restaurants that range from rustic to quirky,” U.S. News & World Report said.

Activities including visiting Commons Beach, cruising down the Truckee River Bike Trail or hitting the slopes at nearby ski resort Palisades Tahoe.

The publication suggested camping at Tahoe State Recreation Area or booking a room at Basecamp Tahoe City.

Which Northern California spots made the list?

Tahoe City wasn’t the only Northern California spot that made the list.

U.S. News & World Report also showcased Eureka, Mendocino, Nevada City, Sausalito, Sonoma and St. Helena.

How U.S. News and World Report came up with rankings

U.S. News and World Report said that it came up with its list of California’s most charming small towns by choosing locations with small populations that were charming and chock-full of unique qualities, including “coastal views, quaint main streets and outdoor pursuits.”

Contributor Sharael Kolberg said she drew on ”personal experience and exceptional research skills” when update the list.
