A Northern California woman died last weekend in what is being investigated as a possible drowning after she went swimming off the shore of Hawaii.

Stacy Coon, 59, of Oroville in Butte County died June 22 while visiting Nā‘ālehu, the Hawaii Police Department announced in a news release.

About 2:40 p.m., police responded to a report of a swimmer in distress at Whittington Beach Park. Police said witnesses reported seeing a woman, later identifed as Coon, swimming in the ocean about 40 yards from shore when she began yelling for help.

Several bystanders entered the water and brought her to shore, where she appeared to become unresponsive, according to the Police Department. The bystanders began performing CPR until authorities arrived.

Coon remained unresponsive despite resuscitation efforts, and she was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police said an autopsy was requested to determine the exact cause of death.
