Man detained by Elk Grove police after incident at gas station dies a day later
A man detained by Elk Grove police officers following an incident at a gas station died at a hospital Sunday after an apparent medical emergency in their custody, department officials said Monday.
Police are investigating the Saturday incident at a Chevron station in the 10600 block of Promenade Parkway where officials in a statement said a 37-year-old man reportedly went behind the cash register area and tried to enter the station’s employee offices. Police officials in a statement Monday said the man appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and was later found to be in possession of cocaine.
Officers arrived just after 12:15 p.m. Saturday and struggled with the man for four to five minutes before handcuffing him. Department officials said he continued to struggle in his handcuffs and officers then placed him in a Wrap restraint.
The device has a locking shoulder harness, leg restraints and ankle straps. The harness is designed to put the restrained person in an upright and seated position.
Department officials in their statement said the man restrained in the Wrap device was placed in the back seat of a police vehicle “positioned face-up and semi-upright with officers checking on him.”
The man experienced the medical emergency in the patrol vehicle a short time later. Officers pulled him from the vehicle and began to render aid until fire personnel arrived to take over. Emergency responders revived the man and took him to a hospital. The man died the next day at the hospital.
Two officers received minor injuries during the struggle with the man, said department officials.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will identify the man once family has been notified.
The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating the incident. Per policy, the department’s professional standards bureau and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office each will conduct independent reviews into the incident, said department officials.
