Trader Joe’s customers will have an easier time shopping in the Sacramento area, thanks to a new expansion.

The popular grocery store chain recently signed an agreement with Turton Commercial Real Estate to lease the property next to its East Sacramento location.

The move will allow Trader Joe’s to provide more parking for shoppers at its Folsom Boulevard store.

“It’s a great benefit to customers of that Trader Joe’s,” Kimio Bazett, director of Turton Commercial Real Estate, on Wednesday, July 16. “It’s the top performing store in the region as we understand it, and (the store’s) existing on-site parking was one of the major Achilles’ heels for that store.”

Here’s what to know:

What is Trader Joe’s?

Founded in Pasadena in 1967, Trader Joe’s prides itself on “providing our customers outstanding value in the form of the best quality products at the best everyday prices.”

Rather than brand-name items, the Monrovia-based grocery store chain focuses on selling food and household products with the Trader Joe’s label.

USA Today readers voted Trader Joe’s one of the best grocery store chains in the nation in 2024, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.

It’s also one of the top places to work in the United States, according to Forbes.

Trader Joe’s was the highest ranking California company on Forbes’ 2025 list of the Best Large Employers in America, landing at No. 2 overall, The Bee reported.

There are more than 600 Trader Joe’s locations in the United States, including 200-plus stores in California.

Where is Trader Joe’s expanding in Sacramento area?

Trader Joe’s, 5000 Folsom Blvd. in East Sacramento, previously leased a 16,000-square-foot property at 4900 Folsom Blvd. on a month-to-month basis, according to Bazett.

The supermarket chain recently signed a 10-year lease for the property at 4900 Folsom Blvd., “securing expanded parking for one of the neighborhood’s most beloved grocery stops,” Turton Commercial Real Estate representatives said in a July 12 Instagram post.

The Folsom Boulevard property includes a 1,700-square-foot building that was once home to Burr’s Fountain ice cream shop, which closed in 2018.

As of Wednesday, it was not clear what could happen to the former Buff’s Fountain building.

How much parking is local grocery store adding?

By leasing the Folsom Boulevard property, the Trader Joe’s East Sacramento store adds approximately 30 to 40 new parking spaces, according to Bazett.

Bazett said this will help the supermarket provide quicker turnover for shoppers looking to park.

“It’s just a game changer for customers and particularly residences of Sacramento,” he said. “It takes some of the pressure off parking in front of neighboring houses and on the city streets.”
