A livestream will journey to the depths of Lake Tahoe. Here’s how to tune in
The Tahoe Fund will livestream the journey of Deep Emerald, a custom-built remotely operated vehicle as it explores Lake Tahoe’s 1,570-foot depths.
This event is a partnership between the Tahoe Fund and the Restoring the Lake Depths Foundation, allowing anyone to witness the ROV’s expedition on Friday through the Tahoe Fund’s website starting at 9:30 a.m.
The two organizations say the event is the first-ever livestream to show the bottom of the lake.
“Few people have had the opportunity to explore what’s under the surface of Lake Tahoe, the second deepest lake in the U.S.,” Tahoe Fund CEO Amy Berry said in a statement.
Built with specific abilities for advanced underwater exploration, Deep Emerald features a 600-meter fiber optic tether that differentiates it from other ROVs and allows the device to reach Lake Tahoe’s deepest points.
The ROV is also equipped with cameras, sensors and tools for sample retrieval and debris removal. In addition to collecting data or exploration, Deep Emerald removes litter from the lake and helps identify aquatic invasive species.
The livestream will feature Tim Crandle, president of SeaView Systems; and Sudeep Chandra, a limnology professor at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe. They will discuss the cutting-edge technology that allows the ROV to reach Tahoe’s depths and the lake’s clear waters.
