Weekend guide: Things to do

Summer may be winding down, but the Sacramento region isn’t slowing its pace. From live music and happy hour patios to street markets and museum nights, there’s still time to soak in the season. Here’s what’s happening Friday through Sunday around the capital.

First Fridays in Oak Park

Every first Friday of the month, the Oak Park community gathers for a block party on Broadway between 32nd and 36th streets.

Bring family and friends to enjoy an evening of food, art, music, shopping and community from 5 to 9 p.m.

777 Happy Hour on the 700 Block

Check out $7 food and drink deals at various bars on K Street in downtown Sacramento from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday through Saturday. Each week is a rotating menu.

It’s the perfect start to your weekend whether you’re after a quick, affordable bite or planning to go out on the town.

Participating locations include: Tiger, Darling Aviary, Kodaiko Ramen, Chando’s Tacos, Townies, K Bar at DoCo, Bailarin Cellars and Ruhstaller.

Chicago at The Venue

Chicago, a rock band from the late 1960s through the 1970s, will be performing at The Venue at Thunder Valley Casino Resort, 1200 Athens Ave. in Lincoln, at 8 p.m. Friday.

The group is best known for songs like “Saturday in the Park”, “Look Away”, “Will You Still Love Me?” and “Questions 67 & 68”.

Tickets start at $57.95, according to the Thunder Valley Resort website, which links to Ticketmaster.

Revolutionary Grain: the Spirit of the Black Panthers, Portraits & Stories

The California Museum, 1020 O St., currently features the exhibit “Revolutionary Grain: Celebrating the Spirit of the Black Panthers in Portraits and Stories.”

It features former Black Panthers who went on to lead in their communities as lawyers, social workers, teachers and political activists in portraits captured by photographer Susanna Lucia Lamaina.

Admission ranges from $8 to $10. Tickets are available at the California Museum website.

Claude Monet Experience

If you’re feeling artsy, visit the Claude Monet immersive experience at 31 15th St. in West Sacramento. It showcases the artist’s most compelling works in a 360-degree display.

Visitors can check out the artwork through virtual reality and 3D art pieces that highlight lesser-known parts of his life.

Those who feel inspired will have an opportunity to grab a paintbrush and create their own masterpiece.

Tickets begin at $18.90 for kids age 4 to 12 and $30.90 for everyone 13 and older. Tickets for those 65 and older and students 13 to 26 are $25.90. There is a $4 processing fee when you book online.

Mixtape Day Party

If you reminisce about the 1990s and 2000s, then the Mixtape Day Party hosted by Sacramento Life and Hella Bored Group is the event for you. The day party is held at Esther Park, 3408 3rd Ave. in Oak Park.

Bring your throwback jerseys, fitted caps, spray tees and bamboo earrings as DJ Sir Flyness and Fiji provide R&B and hip-hop hits all evening.

Tickets start at $17.85 on Eventbrite. The event is Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m.

Our Street Market

Our Street Market is back taking over R Street in midtown featuring street food from chefs of different backgrounds.

The event at 1108 R St., between 12th and 14th streets, will include local eats, vendors and artisans, live performance and DJs.

One of the booths includes Eden: Wine Garden, inviting attendees to come “sip and groove” with them as they explore natural wines and sounds provided by DJ D’Aramiis and friends.

Tickets start at $17.85 on Eventbrite.

Pacific Nations Cup: USA vs Japan

The World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup continues when Team USA faces Japan for a chance to automatically qualify for the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.

The USA Men’s Eagles return to host the qualifying match at Cal Expo’s Heart Health Park in Sacramento starting at 6 p.m.

The fixture determines seeding for the semifinals and positioning for the 2025 finals in Salt Lake City to secure who will get an automatic bid to the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.

The game streams on Paramount+, according to the USA Rugby website. Tickets are available online at Etix and start at $44.

Battle at the Hive II

Sacramento State’s Combat U program returns with its second installment of ‘Battle at the Hive’ on Saturday at The Nest on the university’s campus.

The event features top Combat U athletes competing in amateur MMA bouts alongside Jiu-Jitsu matches throughout the night.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and competition starts at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $46.60 on Eventbrite.

Lil Wayne concert

Five-time Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Wayne will perform with special guest Tyga at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Saturday as part of his 36-city North American tour in support of his 14th studio album, “Tha Carter VI.”

Lil Wayne, whose legal name is Dwayne Carter, first debuted his album series “Tha Carter” in 2004. That album was followed by “Tha Carter II” in 2005, “Tha Carter III” in 2008, “Tha Carter IV” in 2011, and “Tha Carter V” in 2018.

“Tha Carter VI” album was released in June. It included songs such as “Welcome to Tha Carter”, “Banned From NO”, “Loki’s Theme”, “Bells”, “Hip-Hip” featuring BigXthaPlug, “Cotton Candy” performed with 2 Chainz and “Sharks” with Jelly Roll and Big Sean.

The event begins at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $44.

Hella Good Market

Hella Good Market brings an evening filled with cars, community and culture to Drake’s: The Barn at 985 Riverfront St. in West Sacramento on Saturday from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The event includes more than 50 food, drink and retail vendors in a family-friendly setting. Enjoy a showcase of custom cars that will be on display.

NFL is back, where to watch

The NFL is back on every Sunday for the next three months.

Don’t know where to watch the game with other fans?

Check out these Sacramento-area bars, including some dedicated to specific teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers.

Old School in the park

It’s an old school jamboree with classic hits, funk and smooth vibes on a Sunday afternoon in the park.

The event hosted by community radio station KDEE 97.5fm will be held at Cesar Chavez Plaza at 910 I St. in downtown Sacramento. Bring your dancing shoes as DJs will be spinning tunes from 2 to 9 p.m.

Bring a chair, in case you get tired, so you can get up and dance again. The event is for ages 21 and older. Tickets start at $23.18 on Eventbrite.

Annual Black Food Festival

The annual Black Food Festival brings together a culture of food, music and community from the African diaspora.

Its theme “a spicy sweet savory thing” reflects the variety of food, drink and retail vendors that will be present during the festival Sunday at 2251 Florin Road from noon to 6 p.m.

The free community event will also include live entertainment from local artists and DJs.

The event is hosted by father-daughter duo Berry and Ade’jah Accius, who recently organized the Great Foodie Experience in Natomas on Aug. 31.

Raphael Saadiq in concert

Three-time Grammy Award-winning artist Raphael Saadiq kicks off his concert series, “No Bandwidth: One Man! One Night! Three Decades of Hits!,” a 22-city fall tour with his Sacramento show.

The singer and songwriter, who introduced R&B groups Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl, will perform in the capital at Channel 24, 1800 24th St. near R Street on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets start at $75.
