California celebrates 175 years of statehood with Capitol block party
A lot has changed since California became the 31st state admitted to the union on Sept. 9, 1850.
To recognize the history and achievements reached through 175 years of statehood, California birthday celebrations are scheduled this week to take place at the state Capitol.
California State Parks and the State Library will host a block party from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday outside of the state capitol’s west steps, where attendees can enjoy music, “free food truck fare, birthday cake, and California-grown treats (while supplies last),” according to a news release.
A laser display prepared by the creator of the Sacramento Kings’ “Light the Beam” effects will take place 30 minutes after sunset (about 8 p.m.) and will feature 31 “Laser Space Cannons.”
State Parks will livestream the laser show on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook for those unable to attend the show.
Festivities resume from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the west steps with an event hosted by the California State Capitol Museum Volunteer Association. Volunteers dressed in historic attire will serve cake and ice cream while attendees enjoy live renditions of songs from the 1850s, sung by a youth choir.
