Sheriff’s officials were investigating after skeletal remains believed to be human were found Thursday in a rural area in southwest Sacramento County.

Reclamation district employees discovered the human remains about 11 a.m. Thursday along River Road just south of the small town of Courtland, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The area is mostly agricultural land just east of the Sacramento River and a few miles west of Interstate 5. Gandhi said detectives and deputies were at the scene investigating.

The sheriff’s spokesperson did not have any further details about the investigation to release.
