Pedestrian struck, killed on North Sacramento road identified as father of 5

Pedestrian fatality

A pedestrian died Sunday evening after being hit by a vehicle in North Sacramento’s Hagginwood neighborhood, police said.

Officers responded to the scene shortly before 6:30 p.m. and found the pedestrian lying in the roadway, according to Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Officer Allison Smith. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police initially said two vehicles had struck the pedestrian and that one had fled. But after further investigation, Smith said that detectives determined the pedestrian was hit by only one vehicle, and that driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Detectives with the department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit are continuing to review video footage and investigate the involvement of a second vehicle. No impairment is suspected on the part of the driver who struck the pedestrian.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Bee Lao, 46, of Sacramento. A GoFundMe campaign created by his widow said Lao was a father of five — four daughters, ages 5 to 14, and a 2-year-old son.

“Bee Lao was a loving person who was always welcoming to everyone,” Xiong wrote to supporters. “He was also a father who was taken too soon from us.”

The campaign has raised nearly $8,000 of its $10,000 goal as of Thursday morning.

Police are urging anyone with information about Sunday evening’s incident call the department at 916-808-5471.
