Hundreds anticipated at Sacramento protest. California organizers plan 60+ more

Hundreds of protests have been organized and put on across the country in response to the death of Renee Good, who was shot and killed Wednesday morning by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis.

Sacramento protesters gathered Wednesday and Thursday evening. But more communities across California are organizing demonstrations into the weekend.

What happened to Renee Good?

On Wednesday, federal immigration agents were in south Minneapolis as part of a “stepped-up enforcement presence that has drawn increasing scrutiny and anger in the Twin Cities,” the Star Tribune in Minneapolis reported.

ICE agents had gotten their vehicle stuck in a snow bank, which prompted other vehicles to help. According to Minnesota Public Radio, an eyewitness said this caused neighbors to believe it may be an enforcement action. People showed up and some began blowing whistles.

Renee Good was in a Honda Pilot when federal agents on foot converged on her vehicle. The Star Tribune reported that eyewitnesses said Good was given conflicting orders by ICE agents. She backed up her vehicle, turning the wheels away from the officers to comply with one of the orders to leave.

That’s the point, Minnesota Public Radio reported, that the agent in front of the car fired his handgun once through the windshield and at least once through Good’s driver-side window.

Video of the event shows the vehicle continued down the street after the shots were fired before hitting a parked car.

Federal officials characterized the incident as “an act of domestic terrorism” by Good, and the officer “saved his own life.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called that “bull----“ and released a statement calling for ICE to “leave the city and state immediately.”

Are there protests near Sacramento?

Organizers plan to gather on the grounds of Capitol Park at the corner of 15th and N streets. The demonstration is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

There are also protests in Woodland at 11:30 a.m., Roseville at 10 a.m., and in Gold River at noon. Those protests are all on Saturday.

Where are there protests in California?

There are more than 60 protests organized for Saturday through the grassroots group, Indivisible. But they aren’t relegated to just urban centers.

Organizers have scheduled a protest in Modesto at noon. They’re expected to gather at the K Street overpass of Highway 99.

In Southern California, Ridgecrest has a protest scheduled for 10 a.m. The high desert city is about 80 miles east of Bakersfield.

Yreka is more than 200 miles north of Sacramento. The seat of Siskiyou County has a little more than 7,000 people. But protesters will gather there starting at 11 a.m.

There may be other protests that haven’t been scheduled through Indivisible.
