The suspected gunman in a November shooting that left two men dead and two others wounded at an Elk Grove nightclub is in federal custody in Texas on unrelated charges as local authorities work to bring him back to Sacramento County to face charges in the killings.

Roderick Bernard Randall, 43, had been on the run and considered armed and dangerous since the Nov. 2 shooting at Z Town Gastro Pub. Texas authorities notified Elk Grove police last week of his arrest in that state on suspicion of providing false information to federal agents, Elk Grove Police Department said in a statement on Monday.

Randall will be extradited to Sacramento County once his federal case in Texas concludes, Elk Grove police said, where he will be booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on two counts of homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm.

The Nov. 2 shooting just before closing at the popular nightspot in the 8400 block of Florin Road reportedly stemmed from an argument inside the club, Elk Grove detectives said at the time.

Kim Kha Huynh, 18, of Chino Hills, died at the scene. Phuc Minh Vo, 34, of San Jose, critically wounded in the shooting, died little more than a week later at a hospital.

Randall has an extensive criminal history including a 2014 conviction in Sacramento County for premeditated attempted murder in a gang-related 2012 shooting outside a 65th Street Expressway shopping center in south Sacramento that left one person dead and wounded another.

Randall, then 29, was one of four men found guilty in the 2012 shooting and was sentenced to 88 years to life in state prison. Changes to California sentencing law prompted Randall’s release in 2023, his convictions “overturned and dismissed,” said officials at Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

California Department of Justice officials in November also said Randall was considered unhoused and is a registered sex offender following 2003 convictions for lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and pimping a minor under the age of 16.

Anyone with information is asked to call Elk Grove Police Department at 916-714-5115.
