School board approves mascot for new Placer County school. Here’s their pick
Western Placer Unified School District has chosen a name for its new K-8 school in the Village 7 area of the Liberty at Lincoln development.
District school board members approved the name Liberty Point Lions after discussion at Tuesday’s meeting.
The new school, located at the southwest end of Ferrari Ranch Road, is expected to open in the 2030-31 school year, according to district officials.
A slideshow presentation provided to the board Tuesday night said the word “Liberty” reflects the partnership among the district, the city and the developer.
The district said it conducted community outreach through the parent communication app ParentSquare, the district website and social media platforms Instagram and Facebook.
Engagement opportunities included open submissions for school names and mascots, community voting and ongoing reminders across platforms.
According to the presentation, 56,202 community members viewed the outreach efforts and 1,584 survey responses were submitted. Respondents submitted 49 possible school names and 37 mascot options.
The top five school name finalists were Liberty Grove, Liberty Junction, Liberty Oaks, Liberty Point and Liberty Ridge.
The top five mascot finalists were coyotes, lions, owls, patriots and wolves.
Survey respondents ranked Liberty Point and Liberty Ridge as their top school name choices, paired with either lions or coyotes as mascot options.
The district said it also consulted with the city of Lincoln and Lewis Group of Companies during the process.
District officials initially recommended the name and mascot combination Liberty Point Coyotes.
According to the presentation, the recommendation was based on the school’s geographic identity, regional recognition, the mascot’s adaptability and age-appropriate appeal, positive stakeholder feedback and long-term branding considerations.
However, the board ultimately voted to adopt lions as the school’s mascot on Tuesday.
