Car sliced in half at end of south Sacramento chase. Bystander hit by debris, police say

A police pursuit ended with a car crashing into a pole and being sliced almost entirely in half Monday night in south Sacramento. Debris flying from the collision struck a pedestrian bystander, who suffered minor injuries, Sacramento police said.

An attempted traffic stop turned into a short vehicle, chase starting in the Meadowview area and ending near Center Parkway and Mack Road, about 10:15 p.m., according to Sacramento Police Department spokesman Officer Justin Hanks.

Officers took a male suspect into custody after a short foot pursuit. The male was the only suspect in the vehicle, and he was arrested for evasion and an outstanding warrant, Hanks said.

Video taken at the scene in the aftermath of the crash shows the vehicle, a mangled white Dodge Charger that has been almost completely split in half down the middle, between the driver and passenger sides. The vehicle appears to have hit a traffic pole.

“Nobody was injured in the car,” Hanks said. “The pursuit ended with a crash where debris from the crash hit a pedestrian, and the pedestrian suffered a minor injury.”

The identity of the suspect, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was not released. No officers were harmed in the incident.
