Elk Grove police say a man has been arrested in connection with a non-fatal Sunday shooting outside an apartment complex, and identified the suspect as the victim’s ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend.

Authorities had responded to the 3300 block of Renwick Avenue for reports of gunshots, and a second 911 call from the clerk of a nearby gas station who reported that a person with a gunshot wound had entered, the Elk Grove Police Department said Thursday in a news release. The victim had suffered one gunshot in the arm and one in the leg, and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Joshua McClure, 23, was stopped Monday evening on Highway 99 near Sheldon Road by a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy, according to the news release. The sheriff’s office transferred custody to the Elk Grove Police Department, and a search of McClure’s vehicle turned up a loaded, concealed firearm.

McClure was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County jail on suspicion of attempted homicide and firearm-related charges.

The news release describes McClure as “the current boyfriend of the victim’s ex-girlfriend.” The victim was not identified.

In an earlier news release, Elk Grove police described a brief gunfight between the suspect and victim. Based on investigation and evidence from the scene, detectives believed the victim and suspect were involved in an argument outside of an apartment building on Renwick Avenue when the suspect pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the victim.

The victim “then retrieved a firearm from his person and shot back at the suspect,” the police department said. The victim then left the scene in his vehicle and drove to the nearby gas station, while the suspect had fled Renwick Avenue by the time officers arrived.
