Butte County deputies arrest woman after discovering bomb-making facility in home
A woman was arrested by Butte County deputies Thursday after an explosion at a Berry Creek home.
In a news release, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said Elizabeth Ellis, 55, was taken into custody after an explosive device detonated in a Leaf Lane home.
Nicholas West was injured in the explosion, suffering multiple injuries on his hands and legs.
West, 26, was treated by first responders and airlifted to a hospital.
Authorities suspect West had been working on an explosive device he made when it unintentionally detonated.
The area was evacuated and responding deputies obtained a search warrant to gather evidence.
A bomb squad recovered explosive components and determined that explosive devices were being manufactured in the residence.
A further search of the property yielded a seizure of 20 guns, including pistols, rifles and shotguns, plus ammunition. Four of the firearms found during the search were considered illegal assault weapons.
Deputies also found hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms and other illegal drugs.
Ellis, 55, was taken into custody on suspicion of possessing assault weapons, drugs and bomb-making equipment.
Detectives are still investigating the case and anticipate further arrests, they say. The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call 530-538-7671.
