Man at Sacramento-area prison stabbed to death by another inmate, CDCR says

An inmate at California State Prison, Sacramento was stabbed to death Tuesday and officials are investigating his death, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Wednesday.

Moizez M. Munoz died from injuries suffered when another inmate, Richard Alvarez, broke away from escorting officers and stabbed Munoz three times with a “inmate-manufactured weapon” at the Folsom prison, CDCR said in a news release.

Munoz, 30, was taken to an outside hospital for treatment, but died during emergency surgery. He was pronounced dead at 1:57 p.m.

One officer was also injured in the incident and was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Munoz was serving a 13-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance for sale and two in-prison offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, CDCR said.

Alvarez, 33, is serving a life with parole sentence second-degree murder, among other convictions. He also had an enhancement for “street gang act in commission of a violent felony,” CDCR said.

“Alvarez has a history of assaults on inmates and staff since he was admitted to state prison,” according to the release.

Officials from the prison and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the homicide.
