Yolo Sheriff’s Office reveals new details in drive-by shooting that killed teenage boy
The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office on Monday revealed new details about a drive-by shooting that killed a Woodland teenager in what investigators believe was no random act of gun violence.
David Sanchez, 17, was struck by gunfire in the April 24 shooting. He was hospitalized and died two days later, sheriff’s officials announced in a news release Monday. They were hoping newly released details about the homicide investigation would lead to someone providing information that could result in an arrest in the teen’s death.
Investigators believe that a suspect or suspects were waiting for Sanchez, based on video footage collected as evidence. The investigators also believe the suspect or suspects knew Sanchez or the other boys with him.
“The motive for the shooting does not appear to be a random act or a road rage incident,” officials said in the news release.
The shooting was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. on County Road 89, just north of Winters and west of Interstate 505, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sanchez was a passenger in a vehicle with the two other boys, officials said, and he was hit by gunfire as the suspect vehicle passed by. Officials have said Sanchez suffered a single gunshot wound and was driven to a local hospital, before he was transferred to a trauma center. The other boys with Sanchez were not injured in the shooting.
Investigators at the time described the suspect vehicle as a small, dark-colored sedan that was last seen heading north on Country Road 89.
On Monday, investigators released photos of what they believe is the suspect vehicle. Officials said the car appeared to have distinctive damage to the bottom of the rear passenger door, and its front bumper was a different color from the rest of the car.
Based on the video, investigators believe the suspect car was waiting for the vehicle Sanchez was in before the shooting occurred.
Officials asked anyone with information about this shooting to call sheriff’s investigators at 530-668-5215 or submit a confidential tip by calling the Sheriff’s Office Anonymous tip line at 530-668-5248.
