Sacramento man sentenced for murder during 2014 robbery in arranged marijuana buy
A Sacramento man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for a shooting death committed during a robbery in an arranged marijuana purchase, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
A jury in November found Isshiah Chiles guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Draven Rafferty. Chiles was also convicted for a first-degree robbery of another victim in an unrelated crime two days earlier.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Kevin McCormick sentenced the 21-year-old Chiles to 79 years to life in prison, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Chiles remained in custody at the county jail Tuesday evening awaiting transfer to prison.
Charges were filed against then 16-year-old Chiles on April 22, 2015, four days after a third crime he has also been convicted of, according to court records.
The fatal shooting occurred Dec. 16, 2014, when Chiles killed the victim during the course of a robbery, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said the victim’s friend arranged to buy marijuana from one of Chiles’ associates, but was instead robbed at gunpoint on arrival in the 6800 block of Walerga Road in North Highlands. Chiles shot Rafferty in the chest, the DA’s news release said.
In the unrelated robbery, Chiles and two accomplices robbed a victim who was riding his bike home from a toy drive, and then Chiles shot that victim in the leg, prosecutors said.
Chiles also has pleaded no contest to an assault with a firearm charge, which prosecutors say was related to a third, separate shooting in April 2015.
