Man found under car trying to steal catalytic converter, Northern California police say
Police officers on Monday morning found a man underneath a vehicle attempting to steal its catalytic converter in Marysville before he tried to escape; first in a vehicle and then by jumping a fence into a home’s back yard, officials said.
Officers were patrolling the 1700 block of C Street, near 17th Street in Marysville, shortly after 7 a.m. when they first spotted the suspect later identified as Phouvong Borihanh, 51, of Olivehurst, according to a Marysville Police Department news release.
Police said Borihanh was underneath the vehicle lifted with jack stands, and investigators later determined the suspect was cutting the catalytic converter away from the vehicle.
One of the officers parked to investigate further, then Borihanh ran to another car and fled, according to the Police Department. Officers chased the vehicle to East 11th and Sampson streets, where the suspect vehicle stopped.
Police said Borihanh got out of the vehicle and jumped a fence into a home’s back yard, before officers found and arrested him. Officers searched Borihanh’s vehicle and found battery-operated cutting devices, burglary tools and gas siphoning materials, according to the news release.
Borihanh was arrested on suspicion of fleeing with disregard for public safety, vandalism, tampering with a vehicle, resisting arrest, possessing burglary tools and attempted grand theft, along with an arrest warrant on a vehicle theft charge, according to police. Borihanh was being held at the Yuba County Jail with bail set at $125,000.
