Police arrest man on DUI charges after crash kills another driver in North Sacramento
Police have arrested a man who was suspected of being under the influence in a two-vehicle crash Thursday night that killed another driver in North Sacramento.
Alantae Hemmingway, 33, was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, the Sacramento Police Department announced Friday in a news release.
Sasi Kamleshwar Prasad, 57, of Sacramento died in the crash in the area of Grand and Norwood avenues near the West Del Paso Heights neighborhood, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The crash was reported about 10:40 p.m. Officers arrived and found the two vehicles with extensive damage. Police said Prasad suffered major injuries in the crash, and medics from the Sacramento Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.
Three other people involved in the crash, including Hemmingway, were taken to hospitals for medical treatment, according to the Police Department.
Norwood Avenue was closed between Lindsay and Morrison avenues for several hours before it was reopened about 6:20 a.m. Friday.
Along with the vehicular manslaughter charge, Hemmingway could be charged with driving under the influence causing death, according to Sacramento County Jail records. He remained in custody Friday afternoon at the jail, where his bail was set at $250,000.
