Woodland police respond to multiple fights at Pioneer High School, possibly gang-related

Police tape at crime scene

Police officers on Wednesday morning were called to Pioneer High School in Woodland after three fights broke out on campus involving several students, including two brawls believed to be gang related.

The fights were reported about 9:30 a.m. at Pioneer High. Woodland Police Department officers, along with a department school resource officer already on campus, worked with school employees and probation officers to stop the fights, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Victoria Denzl.

The fights broke out around the same time at different locations on campus, and school staff immediately called Woodland police for help, said Jerry Jimenez, a Woodland Joint Unified School District spokesman.

Jimenez said teachers and staff were instructed to remain in their classrooms, so administrators could respond to the fights. He said “at no time were other students or staff in danger.”

Denzl said officers and school staff sent eight students home with their parents and escorted them off campus. Jimenez said “appropriate disciplinary actions were taken.”

No students were seriously injured during the fights, and no school employees reported injuries, Denzl said. No weapons were used in the fights, and no weapons were recovered at the school.

The Yolo County Gang Task Force and probation officers continue to investigate the fights, because police believe two of the fights are connected and gang-related, Denzl said. It was unclear why the other fight started.

The Police Department will continue to have school resource officers and additional patrol officers on campus and in the area surrounding the high school throughout the day to ensure students and staff are safe.
