Driver arrested after suspected DUI crash kills bicyclist in Yuba County, CHP says

Roadway fatality

Officers arrested an Olivehurst woman suspected of driving intoxicated when her car struck a bicyclist who died after the Sunday night collision in Yuba County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Kaitlyn Vansant, 21, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and driving under the influence, according to the CHP Yuba-Sutter Area Office.

The fatal collision occurred about 9:30 p.m. on George Avenue, just south of McGowan Parkway in Olivehurst.

A 36-year-old Olivehurst man was riding a bicycle south on George within 2 feet of the road’s right shoulder. Vansant also was heading south, driving a 2019 Ford Fusion. The CHP said the car struck the rear of the bicycle. Vansant remained at the scene after the collision.

The bicyclist was taken by ambulance to Adventist Health and Rideout hospital in Marysville, where he died from his injuries, the CHP said. The bicyclist’s name had not been released.
