A 22-year-old man has been identified as the suspected assailant and his stepfather as the victim in a fatal shooting at a Rosemont home, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

Damien Nicholas Powell, 44, was found dead Thursday by Metro Fire, having suffered a gunshot wound, the Sheriff’s Office said. Alexander Xayvon Winston, 22, was taken into custody after being found nearby.

Authorities also provided additional details of the shooting in the 9300 block of Avante Way, saying a caller to 911 about 9:06 a.m. stated that her son had killed her husband. The caller stated she had woken up to sounds of shots being fired inside the house.

Winston, a resident of Sacramento County, was found within blocks of the crime scene. Authorities initially had not identified the suspect or victim Thursday, other than to say a stepson had killed his stepfather.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357). Tip information also may be left anonymously at sacsheriff.com or by calling 916-874-TIPS (8477).
