Bicyclist dies after he’s struck by Sacramento city garbage truck

A bicyclist died Monday morning after he was struck by a Sacramento garbage truck in a residential neighborhood in the Valley Hi and North Laguna area, police said.

The fatal traffic collision occurred shortly before 8:45 a.m. near Deer Lake Drive and La Tarriga Way, a few blocks west of Franklin Boulevard.

Officers responded to the reported collision between a city garbage truck and the bicyclist, a man who suffered serious injuries in the crash, said Officer Ryan Woo, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman.

Woo said the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the circumstances, police traffic detectives were called to the scene and have taken over the investigation. Woo said the cause of the collision remained under investigation.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name after his family has been notified.
