UC Davis student on bicycle dies after being struck by garbage truck on campus
A UC Davis student died after a garbage truck struck her as she rode a bicycle Wednesday morning on campus, according to school officials.
The student, a junior at the university, was riding a bicycle shortly after 8 a.m. when the garbage truck struck her near Dairy Road and Hutchison Drive, according to a UC Davis news release.
The injured student, later identified as 19-year-old Trisha Nicole Yasay, was taken by ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center, where she later died. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office released her name Thursday, because she died at the hospital in Sacramento.
“On behalf of UC Davis, we share our deepest condolences with her family. We share in the pain of their loss,” UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May said in the news release. “In this time of grief, I do want to thank our first responders who worked heroically at the scene as well as the UC Davis Medical Center team who did everything they could to save her life.”
The traffic collision was being investigated by the UC Davis Police Department and the Davis Police Departments with support from the West Sacramento Police Department.
Hutchison Drive was closed from La Rue Road to Dairy Road for several hours following the traffic collision before the road reopened about 1:45 p.m, UC Davis police said.
