A man shot by a California Highway Patrol officer in Auburn after advancing toward the officer with a knife has died, the CHP said Sunday.

The man was a suspect in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 80 near Bell Road in Auburn about 12:43 p.m. Saturday. An officer located the suspect in a parking lot on the 2500 block of Bell Road.

The man, who has not been identified, “exited his vehicle, displayed a knife and advanced toward the officer in an aggressive manner,” CHP officials wrote in an incident report. The suspect moved toward the officer and the officer shot him, the CHP said.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to the report. The CHP officer was not injured.

Both the CHP Valley Division investigative services unit and the Placer County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
