Sunday update: Suspected hit-and-run driver dies after being shot by CHP officer in Auburn

A suspected hit-and-run driver, chased down by other motorists, was shot Saturday after advancing on a California Highway Patrol officer while armed with a knife, the CHP said Saturday.

At least two vehicles were involved in the hit-and-run incident about 1:15 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 80, near the Bell Road exit in Auburn. Witnesses said they watched a man driving a white Jeep flee the scene.

“It’s a little foggy, but it sounds like a couple of witnesses, or at least one witness, followed the Jeep to the Applebee’s parking lot on Bell Road,” CHP Officer David Martinez said.

When an officer arrived at the scene and made contact, the driver came out of the Jeep with a knife and started “advancing toward the officer.” After issuing several commands to stop, the officer shot the man, according to Martinez.

The man was taken by ambulance and then by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. His condition was not available.
